YMCA of Greater Long Beach Mission Statement
The YMCA of Greater Long Beach is an association that welcomes people of all ages, ethnic groups, and religious affiliations to unite in a common effort to put Judeo-Christian principles and values into practice, through programs that develop healthy spirit, mind, and body for ourselves, our families, our children and community.
The History of our Program
The Lakewood YMCA Gymnastic Center celebrated 23 years of program for the community in 2008. Our first facility was a warehouse in Hawaiian Gardens. In an early morning fire in October 1998 our gym (and the Hobby Warehouse next store) burned to the ground due to an electrical fire. With the help of the community and borrowed equipment from local gymnastic clubs we continued to run our classes in an empty supermarket on Bellflower & South Street for a year and a half.
We moved to our current building in May 2000! We continue to strive to be a leader in sports and fitness for the children of our community. Many of the instructors have come through our program as young children. We are one of the only gymnastic-only centers in the Los Angeles County area, and the only non-profit center.
